No Disruptions in the Port of Lomé Despite Demonstrations

After the violence of August’s anti-government protests and the exceptionally high numbers of demonstrators in Lomé on 6 and 7 September, Budd’s Togo office reports that the situation is quieter today (8 September 2017).

Some protesters are still on the streets demanding constitutional reform to limit presidential mandates to two but their presence is now sporadic.

In response to the demonstrations, the government put security forces on the streets.  In August, they responded with tear gas and the firing of live rounds. Amnesty International reported that 2 people were killed and several others were injured.  No such reports have been received regarding this week’s demonstrations.

The government also restricted access to internet and the effects of this measure still seem to be having repercussions on telecommunications.

The port has remained safe and continued to function normally throughout the disturbances.
