Gabon: Ports Secure

Budd Gabon
advised earlier today that, despite the attempted military coup which started
in the night of 6 to 7 January 2019, vessels calling in Gabonese ports are not in
danger although commercial operations have come to a halt as port (and all
other) employees were told to stay at home today.

There have
also been cuts in Internet connections and public transport.

The ports
were secured by troops loyal to President Ali Bongo who was seen on television on
31 December 2018 for the first time since his stroke on 24 October 2018.  The President presented his New Year wishes
to the nation from Morocco where he is convalescing.

The latest
reports from Gabon indicate that the coup has been overturned and five rebel
soldiers have been arrested.
