Conakry Port Unscathed by Pre-Election Riots
The Guinean Presidential Elections whose campaign ended in
violence on Thursday and Friday (8 October and 9 October) finally took place on
schedule on Sunday, 11 October 2015.
The bloody clashes which led to deaths, arson, vandalism
and looting were centred around Madina, the commercial centre of the city with
other minor incidents in the other parts of the city.
As usual, the clashes did not spread as far as Kaloum,
the Administrative centre where the port of Conakry is located so the effects on the
port were therefore negligible; in fact, all that could be said is that some
dockers could not reach Kaloum during the days of violence as the routes
leading to the port area were not accessible.
From experience, the people will remain quiet and
peaceful until the annoucement of the results which will probably be made this weekend.
Out of the 8 candidates on the list, the two who have the most support are the Outgoing President Professor Alpha Conde and the UFDG leader,
Cellou Dalein Diallo.
As in the past, Alpha Conde is again the favourite this
year with many Political Parties coming over to his camp in the name of
ARC-EN-CIEL (RAINBOW). The ARC-EN-CIEL brought brought him to power in 2010 and
it is with him again this year, making one assume he will be the likely winner.
Guinea has seen a lot of infrastructural development
within the course of the first term of office of the Professor with the port of
Conakry Container Terminal going through
a remarkable face-lift under the management of Bollore.
There is no likelihood of any more riots but seamen are
advised to stay on board vessels until the election fever is over in a week or
two.
