Senegal: 9 Deaths in Riots

View of Dakar motorway in the afternoon  of 1 June 2023

Following the 2-year sentence of opposition leader Ousmane Sonko, riots broke out in Dakar and other Senegalese cities yesterday (1 June 2023).

The Minister of the Interior declared this morning that a total of nine people had been killed in clashes between the Police and the protesters.

In Dakar, buses were burnt by protestors at the university campus and as shown in the short video taken by our colleague, Ndeye Fatou Diouf, dark smoke clouded the sky over almost empty roads where normally you would expect to see major traffic jams.

Many banks, offices and shops are closed as staff cannot reach their places of work safely.

Access to social media and messaging platforms has been restricted and telecommunications problems are possible.

In this period of extreme volatility, Budd Senegal recommends that all seafarers avoid leaving the port.

Budd’s staff will be working from home whenever possible.
