Abidjan: Sludge Sanctions in Sight
Earlier this month, the Port of Abidjan reminded ship agents that in accordance with 21 April 1999 decree no. 99-318 on Abidjan’s Port Police regulations, the so-called “awareness period” regarding waste, waste oil and sludge disposal ends on 31 December 2022.
As of 1 January 2023, vessels calling in the port of Abidjan will be required to dispose of all waste, waste oil and sludge before sailing.
Vessels will need to pay the waste disposal costs themselves.
Failure to comply with the requirement will entail sanctions which could extend to exclusion from the port’s daily berth allocation meetings.
To the best of our knowledge, local stakeholders have not yet received any more precise information about how the measures will be implemented and what the full range of sanctions will be.
Budd Ivory Coast is monitoring the situation.
