Sierra Leone: Curfew Imposed

Violent protests throughout Sierra Leone, including in Freetown, led to the imposition of a nationwide curfew from 15:00 on Wednesday, 10 August 2022.

In a television broadcast, Vice President Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh claimed that the protests are illegal and have caused several deaths among both the civilian population and security forces.

Today, the curfew is from 19:00 to 07:00.  The situation in the centre of Freetown seems calmer but most shops are closed, and people are avoiding going out.

According to Budd Sierra Leone, the port was unable to function today as most port workers did not dare to travel to work.

No official call for the protest has been made but the situation in the country is tense due to severe economic difficulties and allegations of violence towards members of the opposition.

President Julius Maada Bio is currently out of the country.

In the meantime, internet connections are unstable and telecommunications in general are more difficult than usual.  Nevertheless, we have been able to speak with our colleagues in Freetown by mobile phone.
