Coup d’Etat in Guinea: Update 06/09/21

Following yesterday’s putsch (see here for more details) led by the Guinea Special Forces, Budd’s local office reports that no cargo operations took place today (06/09/21) in the port of Conakry.  We understand that there were no disruptions in other ports such as Kamsar.

Rebel-manned check points on the single road which leads past the presidential palace to the port of Conakry caused massive traffic jams all day.  Many people were either unable, or too frightened, to reach the port for work.

Gunshot was heard near the presidential palace earlier today and Budd’s staff left our office near the port to work from home.

The Guinean Special Forces seem to be in control and have assured the general public that work and other peaceful or commercial activities should go on.  Earlier today, the rebel leaders summoned earlier today all government ministers to a meeting at 11:00 hrs lt (GMT +0).

After this meeting, the Special Forces announced that no port activities, including cargo operations and the export of Guinean minerals such as bauxite, should be interrupted.

Formal confirmation that air and land borders have reopened is expected to follow.
