DR Congo: 3 April General Strike Peaceful. Civil Servants Out on 5 April.
Budd’s DR Congo offices in Kinshasa and Matadi are pleased to report that although the 3 April general strike brought all business activity outside the ports to a standstill, no violent incidents were reported.
Following an announcement that President Kabila may address the Congress tomorrow, there is some hope that his speech will accelerate the appointment of an interim government to organise presidential elections in accordance with the agreement signed on 31 December 2016.
A further strike has also been announced for tomorrow by DR Congo’s civil servants with the aim of obtaining increases in their very modest salaries.
As the political imbroglio continues, the people of DR Congo are learning of the terrible exactions which have taken place in the Kasai province. The United Nations reports that it has found 13 mass graves since the beginning of March and estimates that 400 people, including women and children, have been killed in clashes between the Kamwina Nsapu rebels and the army.
