GoGIN: Maritime Security in the Gulf of Guinea
On 14 October 2016, the European Union (EU) and several West African coastal countries launched the Gulf of Guinea Inter-regional Network (GoGIN) in Lomé where the Exraordinary African Union Summit on Maritime Security and Development was being held.
GoGIN aims to facilitate cooperation between the 19 Gulf of Guinea coastal countries from Senegal to Angola by setting up an effective and technically-efficient network for the exchange of information to improve and coordinate maritime security strategy in the region.
The four-year project has a total budget of just under 9.3 million Euros. The EU will provide 7.5 million Euros and Denmark will contribute 1.785 million Euros.
The GoGIN Support Agency will allocate funds to regional or national endeavours to promote maritime security and combat piracy.
GoGIN is one of a series of measures and resolutions which followed on from the 2013 Yaoundé Security Summit. It replaces the EU’s Critical Maritime Routes in the Gulf of Guinea project (CRIMGO).
Like CRIMGO, GoGIN will be implemented by the French state agency, France Expertise, in cooperation with the Gulf of Guinea’s regional and national instances.
